Installing the CANpro/104 and CANpro/104-Plus
CANpro/104-Plus (PC/104-Plus, PCI) board:
Installation consists of installing the CANpro board into a PCI slot and booting up Windows. The PCI BIOS and Windows will detect the board as an unknown PCI device, and will request that you insert the driver CD. Windows drivers are installed using information provided in an .inf file. The default path for driver files will be ‘Program Files\CTI\CANpro\drivers’ (if the default path during CANpro package installation is followed). Simply use the Windows device driver installation dialogue by telling it the location of the driver files. Follow the installation wizard and Windows will now detect and install all the CANpro ports into the system.
CANpro/104 (PC/104, ISA) board:
Installation consists of installing the CANpro board into a PC104 slot and booting up Windows. You may need to reserve IRQ and I/O or Memory resources from BIOS.
- From ‘Control Panel’ choose to run ‘Add Hardware’.
- Click on ‘Next’ on ‘Welcome to the ‘Add Hardware Wizard’.
- Check ‘Yes, I have already connected the hardware’; click on ‘Next’.
- Choose ‘Add a new hardware device’ from the list; click on ‘Next’.
- Check ‘Install the hardware that I manually select from a list’; click on ‘Next’.
- Choose ‘Multiport serial adapters’; click on ‘Next’.
- Click on ‘Have Disk’; Browse the path where drivers are stored; the default will be ‘Program Files\CTI\CANpro\drivers’; click on ‘OK’.
- Choose ‘Connect Tech Inc. CANpro/104’; click on ‘Next’.
- Click on ‘Next’.
- Click on ‘view or change resources for this hardware’.
- Click on ‘Set configuration manually’.
- Choose configuration options from ‘Setting based on’ list box; you can choose I/O or memory option; choose an option that does not conflict with other devices; make sure you have correct jumper setting for I/O or memory resources.
- Double click on ‘IRQ’ from ‘Resource settings’
- Choose a IRQ value from ‘Value’ that does not conflict with other devices; make sure you have correct jumper setting for this IRQ,
- After conflict free resources are chosen click on ‘OK’.
- Click on ‘Finish’.
- Click on ‘Yes’ to restart the computer.
- After reboot there will be ‘welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard’; check on ‘No, not this time’; click on ‘Next’.
- Check on ‘Install the software automatically’; click on ‘Next’.
- Windows will display a dialog indicating that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing. Choose ‘Continue Anyway’ to proceed with the installation.
- there will be ‘welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard’ for the second CAN port; check on ‘No, not this time’; click on ‘Next’. Follow the wizard as step 19 and 20.
Finding Driver Version
For troubleshooting purposes it is often important to determine which device driver version is being used. Many problems may be corrected by simply installing an updated device driver on your system.
- Go to Start ® Settings ® Control Panel ® System.
- From the System menu, click on the Hardware tab.
- Click on the Device Manager button.
- From the Device Manager, a list of devices will be displayed. Double-click on the CANpro Ports icon.
- Select One of the CANpro ports, which is now listed underneath the CANpro Ports category.
- Right-click on one of the CANpro ports, and select Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Click on the Driver Details button.
- You will now see a list of four files. Look for the file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\ctican.sys - Select this file.
- Once the file is selected, at the bottom of the screen there will be a line:
“File version X.X.X.X”, where X.X.X.X is your driver version.
Uninstalling the CANpro/104
To successfully uninstall the CANpro from a previous installation, follow these steps to ensure the complete removal of driver components from your system.
Step 1: Remove the CANpro/104 from the device manager
- Go to Start ® Settings ® Control Panel ® System.
- From the System menu, select the Hardware tab.
- Click on the Device Manager button.
- Click on Multi-port Serial Adapters.
- Select “Connect Tech Inc. CANpro/104”, or “Connect Tech Inc. CANpro/104-Plus”.
Right-click and select Uninstall.
Step 2: Remove System files
The following files must be removed from your system:
C:\WINNT\INF\oem#.inf (1 or 2 files)
C:\WINNT\INF\oem#.PNF
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ctican.sys
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\cticanb.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\canpro.dll
The # sign represents a number. This number will change from system to system. Please make sure to open the .inf file to ensure that they are Connect Tech .inf files before removing them.
- Go to Start ® Search ® Search for Files or Folders.
- Type in oem*.inf.
- Open .inf file to make sure they are Connect Tech CANpro .inf files and then delete them but remember the number of the oem.
- Type in oem*.PNF and delete the .PNF files with the same oem number and the .inf files that were deleted.
- Type in *can* and delete the following files
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ctican.sys
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\cticanb.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\canpro.dll
