Setting up a BlueHeat/Net for the first time can be done in many ways. The following procedure is suggested as the most direct way to setup your unit.
Step 1: Access SCM
- Connect port one of the BHN to the serial port of your PC via a null modem cable or cable provided by Connect Tech(RJ45 version)
- Open up a connection(9600,8,n,1) to your serial port via HyperTerminal or another serial terminal program
- Power up the BHN unit – The LEDs should begin scanning the ports in order
- During this scanning type “password” at a medium pace – If you don’t get an SCM prompt, reset the unit and try again until successful.
Step 2: Basic Configuration
- Once you’ve entered the SCM you can configure several sections of the BHN unit. The following are required/suggested:
- help: Displays all the various options used in the SCM. Similar features are available via the TCM.
- info: Displays basic information on the unit. Note the serial number.
- net mip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: Set the IP address you want the BHN to use. If your network uses DHCP then ignore this and set DHCP=yes
- boot delay=X: Set your BHN boot delay. If you don’t plan on using SCM in the future set this to a low value(2-5s)
- port # lmode=xxxx: If you have an RS-232/RS-485 capable box you should set all the desired default line settings for all ports.
- cfg password=xxxxx: Change your default SCM password if desired. Be sure to write it down somewhere safe.

- exit
Step 3: Configuration Manager
- Now that you’ve configured your basic settings, connect the BHN unit into your Ethernet network
- Using the installation CD that came with your BHN, install the Configuration Manager (Windows XP only currently)
- The installation is fairly straightforward, click next and yes for most options.
- After installation, the Config Manager should attempt to auto detect any Blue Heat/Net units on your network
- Select the Blue Heat/Net with the correct serial number.
- If you are unable to see your Blue Heat/Net check with your Network Admin to see that your PC/Network is properly configured to reach the Blue Heat/Net from your system.
- Once you’ve installed the Blue Heat/Net, right click on the unit and map the ports to the COM numbers you desire
Step 4: Windows port configuration
- When Windows opens a COM port it overwrites any settings other users may have set or the box uses by default.
- You should configure each port to the correct settings to ensure proper communications.
- Right click on the port and open the properties. This can be done in the Device Manager or Configuration Manager.
- There are many options here. The main one to look at is if you have an RS-232/RS-485 device. Be sure to select the correct line mode for each port.
Step 5: Test port functionality
- Once you’ve installed and configured the ports you can test them.
- Using a loopback plug or null modem cable you can loopback a single port or pair of ports together.
- Use a serial terminal program like HyperTerminal to ensure communications occur.
Step 6: Extra Info
- Once your unit is network accessible you can use TCM or WCM to connect to and configure the box.
- Remember settings in SCM, TCM, and WCM are stored locally in flash on the box. Windows keeps its own settings to make the box accessible from multiple machines.
