Installing the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme
NOTE: It is often necessary to go into the CMOS setup (BIOS) and ensure that the IRQ used by the Echo/Dflex or Xtreme is available to Non-PnP ISA devices only. Look in the CMOS setup for Resource Configuration or PnP Setup options.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add New Hardware.
- Click Next twice.
- Select No, I want to select the hardware from a list.
- Click Next.
- A list of devices is displayed. Select the Multifunction Adapters and click Next.
- A list of manufacturers will be displayed. Click Have Disk.
- Click Browse and select the location of the driver (i.e. A:\Win98), then click OK.
- A list of Echo/Dflex and Xtreme cards will be displayed, select the card that you are using.
- Click Next.
- A configuration menu will pop up with the default settings of your card.
- Click Next and then Finish.
- Do not reboot your computer yet.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System.
- Select the Device Manager tab.
- A list of devices will be displayed. Double click on the Multifunction Adapters icon.
- Select the Echo/Dflex or Xtreme, which is underneath the Multifunction Adapters heading.
- Click the Properties button.
- Select the Resources tab.
- If Windows resources do not match the hardware settings, change the Basic Configurations from the drop down list until the I/O address matches the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme settings.
- If the IRQ does not match the one used with the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme, double click on the IRQ to change the value.
- Click OK.
- Reboot the computer.
- Windows will then install the serial ports.NOTE: If your card does not work, make sure that the hardware settings match Windows resources. Please read the manual for more information on hardware settings.
Finding the Driver Version Number
For troubleshooting purposes it is often important to determine which device driver version is being used. Many problems may be corrected by simply installing an updated device driver on your system.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System.
- Click on the Device Manager tab.
- A list of devices will be displayed. Double click on the Multifunction Adapters icon.
- Select the Echo/Dflex or Xtreme, which is underneath the Multifunction Adapters heading.
- Click the Properties button.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Click on the Driver Details button.
- You will now see a list of files. Select the following file:
C:\Windows\System\ctiser.vxd
Once the file is selected, you will see the version number at the bottom (i.e. 1.XX).
Changing COM Port Mapping
In order to change the COM port mapping for the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme under Windows 95/98/ME, you will need to edit the registry.
WARNING: There are always some risks when accessing the registry directly. Failure to follow the directions exactly might result in erratic operation of your Windows95 machine.
If you want to change COMx to COMy:
- Go to Start -> Run.
- Type in regedit and click OK.
- Go to My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\Child0000
NOTE: Child0000 is used for the first device on a particular board, Child0001 is used for the second device etc. - Select ROOT&MULTIFUNCTION&0000.
- You will have to manually change three of the fields on the right hand side of the screen. These fields are:
1. DeviceDesc
2. FRIENDLYNAME
3. PORTNAME
Change COMx to COMy. - After you change the three entries, exit the registry editor.
- Reboot the computer. The settings made in the registry should now have taken effect. Go back to the Device Manager and see if the COM port numbers have been changed the way you had wanted.
- Do this procedure for every COM port that you wish to change.
Uninstalling the Echo/Dflex or Xtreme
To successfully uninstall the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme cards, follow these steps to ensure the complete removal of any Echo/Dflex /Xtreme components from your system.
Step 1: Remove the Echo/Dflex / Xtreme from the Device Manager
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System.
- Select the Device Manager tab
- Double-click on Multifunction Adapters.
- Select Echo/Dflex or Xtreme.
- Right click and select Remove.Step 2: Remove System files
Remove the following files from your system:
C:\Windows\System\ctiser.vxd
C:\Windows\System\ctiserui.dll
C:\Windows\inf\CTI_DF.INF
C:\Windows\inf\CTIPORTS.INF
Testing the Newly Installed Ports
You can perform a simple loopback test with a terminal program (i.e. HyperTerminal or SerialTest) and a loopback connector to ensure that the newly installed ports are functioning.
Connect the loopback connector to the port you want to test and run HyperTerminal. When you type a character, you should see it on the screen, which means that the port is working. If you remove the loopback connector, the characters that you type should not appear on the screen.
